![]() Many Transformers stories have tried for an epic feel, but none feel more deserving of the description than Barber's work. Filled with twists that reward a dedicated reader but never too dark that it turns depressing, (one consistent package of comic relief is the ex-Decepticon Thundercracker, now an aspiring screenwriter of comparable talent to Tommy Wiseau). The series's second rebrand to Optimus Prime, in turn, widens the focus to the cosmos as the eponymous hero reckons with the lineage of Cybertronian leaders from which he derives his title, all the while ancient foes begin to rear their head. After the crossover "Dark Cybertron," the series shifts focus to Earth when a returned Optimus Prime takes a team of Autobots to the planet, only to run afoul of a Decepticon-Human alliance. The series' initial run, Robots In Disguise, is a political drama focused on the Autobots, Decepticons, and unaligned Cybertronians ("NAILs") attempting to pick up the pieces of war to rebuild. Rather than a character dramedy, Barber is focused primarily focused on politics and myth-making, and in turn how those institutions created by those are propped up, undermined, then remade. The sister series of More Than Meets The Eye, Barber's series - retitled and retooled thrice despite a fairly consistent through-line of narrative and cast - is distinct from Roberts' work. Though many of the Transformers comics published by the defunct Dreamwave have faded from memory, "The War Within" is the diamond in the rough which has endured. In the original Transformers: Beast Wars animated series the Maximals and the Predacons are descendants of the Autobots and the Decepticons. Things change when the Autobots discover Megatron is intending to transform the planet into a mobile battle-fortress if they can't stop him, there'll be no escaping Cybertron anywhere in the universe. ![]() Tarn and the rest of the DJD pursued Black Shadow for taking bribes from the Autobots. The comic is set during the beginning of Optimus Prime's tenure as Autobot leader - initially, a librarian named Optronix, the green Prime intends to have the Autobots evacuate Cybertron.
